A lawyer who was defending an associate of Saddam Hussein has been found dead after being abducted in Baghdad Thursday, reports the BBC.
Sadoun Nasouaf al-Janabi was shot in the head and chest and his body, dumped outside a Baghdad mosque, was identified on Friday morning.
The Iraqi government condemned the killing, which is seen as indicative of the difficulties the trial, which has been adjourned, may face, the BBC said.
The trial was adjourned after opening Wednesday, but will hear testimony at the weekend from a sick witness, Wadah Ismail al-Sheik, who was a top intelligence official under Saddam Hussein.
Janabi was the lawyer of Awad Hamed al-Bandar, one of Saddam Hussein's co-defendants and a former top judge. His body was found outside Baghdad's Firdous Mosque shortly after he was abducted on Thursday evening.
The lawyers' union feared that the killing would have serious repercussions for Iraqi justice. "This will hinder lawyers from defending those held for political reasons," union official Diaa al-Saadi, told the BBC.
